Prizes, balloons and nibbles initially caught the eye of our customers as they entered our Maple Ridge Black Bond Books store on May 2nd last year. Quickly it became apparent something new, exciting and different was happening. It was the Authors for Indies event. What a thrill it was to have three incredible local authors in attendance; Annette LeBox, Tiffany Stone and D.B. (Derrick) Carew. They enthusiastically showed support for independent bookstores by experiencing what booksellers do every day.
A highlight for our customers and staff was the unique opportunity to interact with guest authors as booksellers. Our authors greeted and chatted with customers and helped them find books they were looking for. The authors made connections with customers offering personal recommendations of recent finds or longtime favourites.
Black Bond Books will be celebrating 53 years of independent bookselling this year. We have been in the Maple Ridge community for over 30 years and have 10 other locations (including two Book Warehouse stores in Vancouver). We are more than a place to pick up the latest bestseller; we specialize in genres for all interests and ages. Connecting with our customers and community is a big part of who we are. Our customers are more than just faces. It is a privilege to get to know their names, interests, hear about vacations, celebrate special events or empathize when they suffer a loss. All the staff at Black Bond Books love books and have a passion to share the treasures we find with our customers. We all have different reading interests and get excited sharing what we love with each other to help expand the knowledge of our team.
Authors for Indies is April 30th this year. We look forward to seeing our regular customers and the opportunity to meet new ones at our event. Our staff will prepare by getting the prizes ready, decorate the store and set out some nibbles. More importantly, we are really excited to meet this year’s participating authors who will be engaging with our customers and staff while showing support for Independent book stores.
